In February 2010, Year 8 students were invited to represent Dubai English Speaking College at the ‘Young Musicians of the Gulf’ competition which was held at St Christopher’s School in Bahrain. These students were: Wojciech Rzeplinski, Nathan Randell, Drew Macpherson, Ryan Newman, Natasha Hall, Anna Thomas, Aled Jones and Irini Doyle .

This very special event was conceived in 1998 as a celebration of young musical talent within the Gulf and is now a most prestigious and high profile event. The competition this year took form in a very different style and unfortunately our winning performance in the ‘Freestyle Category’ last year was no longer on the cards. The creative element of the competition has been put to one side and the more ‘classical’ approach has been once again embraced. However, with determination and a willingness to rise to the challenge we took 3 soloists: Wojciech (Piano), Nathan (Voice) and Drew (Clarinet). All of the students faced the trio of adjudicators with the upmost professionalism and Wojciech was fortunate enough this year to get through to the second round of the competition. The other ensemble members pulled together in a united rendition of Handel’s ‘The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba’ which is hoped to be a feature on the radio in the forth coming months!
