At Dubai English Speaking College, all children are encouraged to enjoy Mathematics and become more enthusiastic mathematicians by developing their skills, qualities and knowledge through practical experiences, which have relevance and purpose in everyday situations.

Mathematics is delivered through a variety of teaching methods and approaches. The school uses Heinemann as its main commercial scheme to support the teaching of the learning objectives.

At Dubai English Speaking College we aim to:

• Give all students equal access to the whole mathematics curriculum
• Ensure that all children experience success
• Enable each student to achieve his/her potential
• Develop mathematical thinking
• Develop knowledge, skills and understanding through real life situations and contexts
• Enable each student to work co-operatively and independently

The key Stage Three Tests for Mathematics take place early in May. There are three papers:

• A one hour written test for which pupils may not use a calculator:
• A one hour written test for which pupils may use a calculator:
• A mental arithmetic taped test lasting approximately 20 minutes, consisting of 30 questions for which students are encouraged to work out their answers in their heads.

What can parents do to help?

• Encourage your child and be supportive when they are practising their mathematics at home:

• Take every opportunity to give mental arithmetic challenges to your child when stuck in traffic jams or around the house:

• While shopping at the supermarket keep an estimate of the total cost of the items in the shopping basket. Mentally work out sale prices quoted as 10%, 25% ,33 % or 70% off:

• Look at the capacities and weights listed on the sides of food packets, cans and bottles. Try to estimate the weights or volumes to become familiar with metric and imperial units:

• Estimating distances is useful too. Know the measurement of your height in Metres and in Centimetres.

• Ensure your child has all the necessary equipment for school every day.
